Seeking Angler Feedback: Proposed Designated Waters Licence for Mataura and Waikaia Rivers

Southland Fish & Game is consulting with anglers regarding proposed changes to fishing licence requirements for the mid/upper Mataura (above the Ardlussa Bridge) and Waikaia rivers.

Over the 2023/24 fishing season, Southland Fish & Game monitored angler use of the Mataura River (upstream of the Ardlussa Bridge) and the Waikaia River. Our monitoring revealed the following:

During the peak angling period between January and March, at least two thirds of angling pressure was from non-resident anglers.

At times, 70-90% of fishing beats/reaches were occupied by anglers.

Some particularly popular fishing beats received almost daily angler use which raises concerns about the influence of this fishing pressure on fish behaviour and the angling experience.

Previous research conducted by the University of Otago has revealed that some anglers have been displaced from the mid and upper Mataura due to their concerns about crowding.

The Southland Fish & Game Council is seeking feedback from licence holders on whether they would support the requirement for anglers to have a Designated Waters Licence on the mid and upper Mataura River and the Waikaia River.

The consultation period closes Wednesday 12 June, 2024.
