First weekend about to begin!
With the first weekend of the 2024/25 season and the school holidays here, it’s the perfect time to head out with the family for a fishing trip. While many of our high-country lakes remain closed until the first Saturday of November (the 2nd), there are still some lakes open that offer excellent fishing opportunities. Be sure to check your regulations pamphlet for details. All designated waters rivers are open, offering adventurous anglers the chance to explore true wilderness fishing. Keep in mind that if you choose to fish any Designated Waters, you'll need a valid Designated Waters Licence for that region, which can be purchased from the Fish & Game website.
IMPORTANT NOTE: When fishing on a Designated Water you MUST carry your Current Sports Fishing Licence and valid Designated Waters Licence receipt for that region with you. Without this on your person while on these waters, it is considered 'fishing without a licence'.
If you can’t get away for the weekend, don’t worry—there are still great fishing spots in our lowland rivers and lakes. These areas are close to Christchurch and convenient for many anglers. A useful tip: try fishing early or late in the day when fish tend to be more active, which will increase your chances of a successful catch.
For more information and to purchase licences, visit the Fish & Game website here.
Take a Kid Fishing 2024
Just before new season started the Take a Kid Fishing event returned. Hosted by the Take a Kid Fishing Trust at the Groynes Junior Lakes. Christchurch graced the occasion with perfect sunny weather, creating an ideal backdrop for a day of family fun. Between 2,000 - 3,000 attendees from near and far came together to enjoy the family event, which wrapped up at 1 PM.
North Canterbury Fish & Game made sure the junior lakes were stocked with 800 vibrant rainbow trout for the day. Participants had a fantastic time, catching approximately 300 trout during the event, leaving around 500 catchable rainbow trout still available for the school holidays which begun today (30th September 2024). The North Canterbury team also set up a tent at the event, issuing free licences for kids under 12 and treating young anglers to delicious gummy fish.

Opening Day Review
The North Canterbury Region enjoyed delightful weather on opening day this year, making for an excellent start to the fishing season. Anglers across the region reported plenty of catches, even with many rivers having higher flows. While not everyone could make it out on the early opening day due to other commitments, those who spoke with rangers were thrilled to kick off the season and embrace the great outdoors.
This year also saw a surge in young anglers hitting the water, thanks to school holidays and the Groynes being stocked with rainbow trout. The young fishers of North Canterbury had an absolute blast! Just a reminder: all anglers using the lakes at the Groynes must be under 18 and hold a current sports fishing licence.
- For children under 12: A full season licence is free (but still required).
- For juniors aged 12 to 17: A full season licence costs $31, or you can choose a day licence for just $6.
Don’t forget that children under 12 can obtain a free hard copy licence, which remains valid until they turn 12. These licences can be issued by staff at the North Canterbury Fish & Game office during open hours at 595 Johns Road.
Weather Across the Region
The weather forecast for lowland areas from Friday through Sunday looks promising, offering fantastic fishing opportunities for families and friends alike. However, conditions in the backcountry are a bit more uncertain. Adventurous anglers willing to tackle these unpredictable elements might be rewarded with some exciting action!
With larger downpours expected in the high country over the next few days, it’s crucial to check river flows and weather warnings before you head out. Remember to factor in travel time and possible fatigue for longer trips. To help you plan your fishing adventures, be sure to check the following resources:
