Para Wetland is one of the region’s most important wetlands and is a national flagship wetland for Fish & Game and the Game Habitat Trust. Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game Council now manages approximately 80% of Para Wetland.

Ample hunting opportunities abound to hunt this wetland during the season. After the Opening Weekend of the gamebird season, it is possible to hunt in most places within the wetland either in the morning or evening. Opening Weekend is when the wetland is busiest, and hunters are invited to make an application to hunt in this area on a ballot form below.

Para swamp is being developed to improve game bird hunting opportunities and new sites are becoming available with time.
