Where to Catch Rainbow Trout in North Canterbury
The North Canterbury region boasts both brown and rainbow trout, though some areas are especially known for their rainbow trout populations. For the best chance at catching rainbow trout, head to the high-country lakes and rivers. While they do appear in lowland rivers, high-country locations tend to have larger populations.
Some prime spots include lakes within the Rakaia and Waimakariri catchments, with Lake Coleridge standing out as a reliable area. Rainbow trout are also found in Lake Guyon, part of the Waiau catchment. If you prefer river fishing, the upper Waimakariri catchment and its tributaries are excellent choices for targeting rainbow trout.
Tips for Catching Trout
A common question from anglers who are struggling to get a bite is, "What should I use to catch a trout?" The key is to carry a variety of flies, lures, or soft baits, as trout feed on a diverse range of insects, invertebrates, and baitfish. An old fishing adage, "match the hatch," suggests using something similar to what the trout are currently feeding on to increase your success.
Your fishing approach may need adjusting based on the body of water. For instance, if fishing in deep water, choose a lure or fly that reaches the bottom, as trout often stay there. While this may feel like you’re hauling around extra tackle, it greatly improves your chances of catching fish.
Being flexible in your methods not only helps with success but also makes you a better angler overall. For example, if you’re trolling in Lake Coleridge at an 8-meter depth and catching fish, you could replicate this success on a fly rod or spinning by simply adjusting your technique to reach that depth.
