A major role of Fish & Game is to identify and protect the habitat of sports fish and game birds.

Advocating for habitat protection and public access improvements is fundamental for the sustainable management of fish and game bird populations and is extremely important to our licence holders.

Funds from prosecutions of illegal game bird hunting and fishing activities are allocated to be spent on habitat and/or access improvements via small grants.

That's why North Canterbury Fish & Game is actively involved in applying for funding for habitat restoration projects that support the species we manage and the habitats they depend on.  Additionally, funds raised through prosecutions related to illegal hunting and fishing activities are reinvested into habitat and public access improvements through targeted small grants. These initiatives help us support landowners to build a network of protected areas and accessible natural spaces for everyone to enjoy.
