Every person who wants to go fresh water sports fishing or game bird hunting in New Zealand must first purchase a licence.
The licence fees are primarily charged to cover the cost of managing the fish and birds and the habitat they depend on.
Whole Season Adult

Offers greatest versatility to most game bird hunters.
Entitles the holder to hunt or kill game at any time during the open season for game in (a) the region for which the licence is issued; and (b) all other regions.
Whole season Junior

For children aged 12 - 17 years.
Entitles the holder to hunt or kill game at any time during the open season for game in (a) the region for which the licence is issued; and (b) all other regions
Whole season Child

For children aged 11 and under.
Entitles the holder to hunt or kill game at any time during the open season for game in (a) the region for which the licence is issued; and (b) all other regions
Day Licence Adult

Entitles the holder to hunt or kill game.
These licences are only available after the second Sunday after opening day of the new season, during one (1) day in the open season for game inclusive in (a) the region for which the licence is issued; and (b) all other regions.
Day Licence Junior (12-17)
$10
Entitles junior licence holders between 12-17 years to hunt or kill game.
These licences are only available after the second Sunday after opening day of the new season, during one (1) day in the open season for game inclusive in (a) the region for which the licence is issued; and (b) all other regions.
