Maimai on public land fall under the regulatory framework of three documents.

  • Ministry of the Environment’s National Environmental Standards for Freshwater (NES-FW)
  • Environment Southland’s proposed Southland Water & Land Plan (2018)
  • Environment Southland’s Regional Coastal Plan for Southland (2013).

Breaches of these conditions may result in the local authorities recuperating costs for the inspection and removal of non-compliant maimai from their owners.

Please adhere to the conditions laid out here and ensure your maimai is well maintained, secured against flood events and is kept free of any litter (including all spent shotgun shells, and wads where possible).

Maintained and functional maimai increase the recreational activity within our region and are an asset to the landscape.

Maimai in Natural Wetlands
