Sunday, September 29th, marked the return of the Take a Kid Fishing event, hosted by the Take a Kid Fishing Trust at the Groynes Junior Lakes. Christchurch graced the occasion with perfect sunny weather, creating an ideal backdrop for a day of family fun. Between 2,000 - 3,000 attendees from near and far came together to enjoy the family event, which wrapped up at 1 PM.
North Canterbury Fish & Game made sure the junior lakes were stocked with 800 vibrant rainbow trout for the day. Participants had a fantastic time, catching approximately 300 trout during the event, leaving around 500 catchable rainbow trout still available for the school holidays which begun today (30th September 2024). The North Canterbury team also set up a tent at the event, issuing free licences for kids under 12 and treating young anglers to delicious gummy fish.
Don’t forget, the Groynes Lakes are designated as JUNIOR lakes, meaning only those under 18 can fish here. All youth fishing in these lakes are required to have a current Sports Fishing Licence. As a reminder, the new fishing season begins on October 1st, so be sure your licence is up to date!
- For children under 12, a full season licence is free (but it’s still required).
- For juniors aged 12 to 17, a full season licence costs $31, or you can opt for a day licence for just $6.
Tight Lines these holidays!
