Fish & Game is advising anglers that the Whau Valley Dam will be closed for about six weeks while some tree felling is carried out.
Fish & Game Northland Manager Rudi Hoetjes says that pine trees on a six hectare parcel of council-owned land adjacent to the dam are to be cut down.
The work is expected to start in mid to late February, depending on the weather.
Mr Hoetjes says the man-made dam is stocked with rainbow trout and there are also some browns in the lake which provides the nearest fishing anglers have to Whangarei’s urban area.
“We ask that anglers exercise some patience and observe the closure that’s being made for obvious health and safety reasons.
“Please either visit our Northland Fish & Game pages on the Fish & Game website (click here), or feel free to drop into our Whangarei office or phone to discuss some alternative fishing spots.”
Mr Hoetjes says that the Whangarei District Council has given an assurance that staff will work closely with contractors to ensure there are no risks to the water quality.
A post-harvest clean-up will take place to remove any leftover debris from the popular site.
