Family and kids fishing events – don’t miss out!
Taranaki Fish & Game holds a series of events to create an angling opportunity for children and families by providing them with the knowledge, skills and support to successfully fish for sports fish as well as providing parents and caregivers with the skills to be able to bring their children or grandchildren back fishing in the future.
The 4th annual Lake Rotomanu Family fishing day will be held on Saturday 28th of October 2023 between 8am and 1pm. The day has been running annually for the past three years with great success and plenty of smiling faces around the lake. Prior to the day there is a release of 500 1kg rainbow trout and a handful of ‘trophy’ fish up to 3kg+. The lake is also home to a healthy population of perch which are a good eating fish and can create some excitement when hooked.
To get your family involved head to the Fish and Game website link (https://fishandgame.eslltd.co.nz/shop) and obtain a free fishing license if your child is aged under 12 on the 1st of October; or by going to your local Taranaki Hunting and Fishing store in late September, both stores have hard-copy registration forms, and fill out the relevant information. This information will be used to write a permit that allows your child to fish at Lake Rotomanu all year. The permits can be picked up on the day and families will then be able to distribute themselves at suitable fishing sites around the lake. Volunteers will also circulate to provide advice and assistance where needed. Families are encouraged to bring what fishing gear they have.
Located in Fitzroy New Plymouth, Lake Rotomanu it is a perfect spot for families as it is close to town and easily accessible. Even after the fishing day there are still plenty of fish left in the lake allowing for continued fishing opportunities for other licensed anglers. The event is run in conjunction with the Inglewood Rod, Gun and Recreation Club and Taranaki Hunting and Fishing.
The Stratford Kids fishing day is held at the Scout Den pool on the Patea River in Stratford’s King Edward Park. The event will be held on Saturday 2nd December 2023 from 8am to 1pm. Prior to the event 300 good sized rainbow trout are released into a fenced off area of the pool. Throughout the day kids have a 15-minute time slot to catch themselves a trout to take home. Once the day is over the barriers are removed and the remaining fish are free to move about the river.
To register your child for the event, call or visit the Stratford I-Site building from early November, or turn up on the day and we will find a timeslot to put your child in.
