Be a More Successful Duck Hunter…Here’s How Don’t Miss Duck Hunter’s Day!

Aspiring duck hunters are being offered the chance to learn the secrets of successful duck hunting at a “how to” day being organised by Hawke’s Bay Fish & Game staff in Napier on Sunday April 15.

The game bird hunting season begins on May 5 and Fish and Game officer Nathan Burkepile says the education day is perfectly timed for duck hunters wanting to improve their skills, or beginners wanting to know how to get started.

“The education day is free and is aimed at teaching hunters what they need to be more successful at attracting and harvesting ducks,” Mr Burkepile says.

And novice hunters aren’t being forgotten.

“We are encouraging young or beginner hunters to come along too as the day is structured to provide them with the information and instructions they need to give hunting a go,” he says.

“They shouldn’t be worried about not knowing what to do – the programme is designed to give them practical advice in realistic hunting situations so they know what to do on Opening day,” Mr Burkepile says.

“We want those attending the education day to leave knowing more than when they arrived so they can use that knowledge to put a duck dinner on the table for their family when the season opens.”

The topics covered will include pond, river, and field decoy layouts for ducks, paradise shelduck and Canada geese, maimai preparation, predator control and duck calling.

For safety reasons there will be no live firing but Mr Burkepile says there will be lessons on how to get the most from your shotgun, including patterning it.

Those attending the education day will be in the draw for Cupped Wing Duck Call.

The Duck Hunters’ Day is being held Sunday April 15 at the Hawke’s Bay Fish & Game Office on Burness Road.  Entry is free.
