Wellington Weekly Fishing Report - 2 February 2023

Welcome to our abridged fishing report for this week

Pictured – Ben Ellison with a wily old brown trout from a small Wairarapa trib, caught last weekend when the main rivers were too high to fish.

Staff are currently undertaking field work so there is no commentary on conditions, however, the links provided will take you to the live updated flows and weather for the river and region you plan to fish.

IMPORTANT NOTE – Protect Your Right to Fish!

Submissions are currently open on a critical piece of legislation that will have a direct impact on the future protection of trout, their habitat, and your access to the wilderness.

It is vital that anglers demand that their values are considered and enshrined in the new law. See below for how you can have your say.

Protect Your Right to Fish!

The rewrite of the Resource Management Act (RMA) fails to reflect our Kiwi values to enjoy a healthy environment for recreation, fishing and hunting.

The proposed Bill mentions protecting public access but does not stop development pressures from overriding that access or safeguarding our natural environment.

It even removes the protection of trout and salmon, and their habitats, a key part of the RMA which has allowed Fish & Game to advocate so effectively for freshwater quality and quantity over the last 30 years.

There are a raft of other changes that will have serious impacts on your future ability to enjoy fishing and recreation in our wild natural places.

Making a submission is quick and easy.

Click here to learn more about what is being proposed and how you oppose the Natural and Built Environments Bill until it protects the outdoors for fishing, hunting and recreation.

Notice Board

  • Treble Hooks - New regulations for the 2022-23 season ban the use of treble hooks on waterways where there are maximum size limits on trout i.e., fish over a certain size must be returned. These rivers are identified in Note 3 on page 39 of the regulations book. This measure was adopted by the Wellington Fish & Game Council to help the survival of large fish, the breeding specimens, when released after being caught. Please consult the Wellington section of the regulations guide, particularly Note 5 which details where trebles are permitted. All other waters only single hooks are allowed.
  • Wellington Fish & Game has been advised of the following dates for flushing flows from the Moawhango Dam:
    14 Feb, 21:00-02:00
    14 Mar, 21:00-02:00
    25 Apr, 21:00-02:00

If you have any information you'd like to have considered for addition to the notice board, please get in touch with us.

*This report was accurate at time of writing. For your safety please ensure you check the latest weather and river flow information before you head out on the water.
