Reel Life September 2022

Northlands Trout Liberations

In early May, Northland Fish and Game completed its annual trout liberations.

Whau Valley, Wilsons Dam, and Lake Manuwai have been restocked with rainbow trout.

There is some natural recruitment, but the stocking ensures that there are good numbers of fish to catch in these fisheries.

The wet winter has replenished most ponds, wetlands and groundwater levels.

Hopefully, the major flood events are behind us, and the water clears up for the start of the season.

A recent spawning survey of some of the tributaries of the Wairua River saw good numbers present.

The headwaters are tight but do produce some exciting fishing. Small, bladed lures that can be fished slowly through the pools work well.

Take the Family Fishing

The new season commences on Saturday 1st October 2022.

The family licence is by far the best value-for-money licence on offer.

A family licence can be made up of two parents or grandparents and up to four of their children or grandchildren under the age of 18.

This licence can also be used anywhere in NZ, except the Lake Taupo fishery.
