Fishing School?

Although nymphing with an indicator is still very effective, nearly all competition fly fishers have given up their strike indicators and transitioned to Czech Nymphing.

If you have ever seen a skilled angler Czech Nymphing, you know that using the two strategies together can literally double the number of fish you catch.

Czech Nymphing is relatively easy to learn and far less reliant on casting, so most anglers can pick it up rather quickly.

Staff have been working to bring fly fishing classes to our region, and we will do our best to promote any fishing classes we hear about.

Local guide Rob Vaz is planning a series of Kiwi Nymphing Clinics with the first class in Turangi on the 21^st -22^nd November 2020.

It's time to book in your summer fishing trips

The travel season is here, and we would like to help plan your fishing trip.

Staff are actively working to make your planning easier and just launched a new travel and camping guide to show you where you can travel and fish within the region.

When you are planning your trip, it is often helpful to know where there is public land in the area.

Staff have worked with Walking Access New Zealand to plot over 100 fishing locations in the Auckland/Waikato Region on their web-based mapping system (WAMS).

The ability to use aerial imagery with an overlay of public land to plan your fishing trip can be extremely useful, especially when looking for holes to fish and access locations.

Although there is a specific hunting and fishing map, staff recommend the Outdoor Access Map as it has more information including hydro areas.

Mistakes were made

There were some minor changes in the formatting of the 2020/21 regulations book, although there were no changes to the rules in the Auckland/Waikato region the resulting booklet was full of typos.

Most were corrected prior to printing but unfortunately some slipped through.

The one that impacted the Auckland/Waikato regulation was the winter closure of the Waimakariri, when in fact the stream is open all year.
