‘Good fish’ caught with bait Kai Iwi Lakes

The weather has finally turned and the temperatures are heading in the right direction.

We’ve had some reports of good fish activity and fish caught in the Kai Iwi Lakes.

Bait still seems to be the preferred method to get down to the colder water and the fish.

Cooked prawns or shrimp are doing the business over there at the moment.

The Kai Iwi fishing competition is scheduled for the first weekend in July – 6^th and 7^th July 2019.

Keep this weekend free and come along for a great family fishing weekend. Confirmed details of the competition will be in the next Reel Life issue in June.

The dune lake galaxias monitoring survey was carried out in March. This involves Fish & Game, DOC, Northland Regional Council, Local Iwi, The Kai Iwi lakes management committee and North Tec.

The data is currently being analysed and results will be out later in the year. All aspects of the lakes biology were surveyed. The research will help to determine the interactions between the various species living in the lakes.

Annual stocking of Northland’s lakes and reservoirs will occur later in May.

There are fish out there but you just have to find them!

All lakes and reservoirs are open year-round as well as the Wairua River downstream of the confluence of the Waiotu and Whakapara rivers.

All other rivers in Northland region close from April 30.

Winter licences are available to buy ($78 adult) in fishing and outdoor stores and online (for NZ resident anglers only).
