So the seasons winding down but don't hang up your waders just yet…May sees some pretty epic fishing still on the go in the Otago and Southland regions.
Browns migrate up the Queenstown, Wanaka, Hawea and Te Anau lake tributaries and many of these remain open throughout May. Hotspot-style nymphs to grab the eye are my standard and while they’re mostly fished behind a double tungsten to get deeper down into those bouldery runs, don’t put away the dry fly box just yet...
Mayfly hatches can be a feature of May as all those nymphs which have matured over the past few months hatch out before the days get too short. Dry droppers can prove successful along the edge waters and banks where migrating / new addition browns will rest... and dont forget big streamers!
Check the forecast before venturing out in May and enjoy the final month of our regular freshwater season... next month, we break out the spey rods!
