Anglers who fish the Rangitaiki River within Kaingaroa Forest, using the Ngahuinga and Kiorenui roads public access easement, have been reminded to drive carefully.

Fish & Game Officer Anthony van Dorp says the message is “stick to the speed limits and be alert for road hazards and other vehicles.”

He says that Timberlands has advised that there have been a number of road crashes in the forest recently.

The forest roads carry oversize logging trucks and other traffic and the unsealed roads in particular can be hazardous.

Mr van Dorp says that forest security staff are now carrying out speed checks of vehicles, and some drivers have been banned for driving at excessive speeds.

“With the winter forest recreational access season approaching for access into Timberlands Forests – it usually opens in the first weekend of May, fire risk permitting, this is a timely reminder.”
