Northland

Northland Region

The Northland Fish and Game Region is a large one that extends from the tip of the north island at Cape Reinga, right down to a line that runs just south of Mangawhai Heads, north of Auckland. The region includes part of the huge Kaipara Harbour.

Trout and angling under threat

Trout and salmon are facing one of the most serious threats posed to them as a result of new legislation just introduced to Parliament.

Welcome

Northland has hundreds of kilometres of fishable streams and rivers. Most of them have heavily wooded banks which tends to keep the water cooler in the summer.

Angler pressure on these streams is low, offering a semi-wilderness experience. Winter fishing in Northland offers the best opportunity to fish local lakes and reservoirs as the trout become more active in the cooler waters.

Northland offers some excellent duck and upland game bird hunting in paddocks, harbours, estuaries and other areas during the season.
