Both Barrels July 2024 - North Canterbury
- North Canterbury
- 23/07/2024
As we approach July 28th, the end of the hunting season for many game birds in our region, there are still excellent opportunities ahead. August offers upland game bird hunting, with the last pheasant weekend scheduled for August 3rd-4th, and quail and chukar available until August 25th. Don't store away your shotgun just yet; there's more great hunting to be enjoyed.
With the recent rainfall in our region, following a prolonged dry spell. Lake Ellesmere is slowly rising, flooding more lake margins and providing increased food sources for game birds, this will also provide great opportunity to hunt flooded paddocks.
Although we've had relatively calm weather this season with little strong winds, the long-range forecast suggests hunters may have one last chance to experience a southerly blow on the lake. Consider taking a day off work to make the most of it!
Pukeko Hunting Opportunities
Pukeko hunting remains open in North Canterbury until September 23rd, with a daily bag limit of 5 birds. They are ideal for introducing new or novice hunters, as they tend to fly at a slower pace when flushed. Group hunts, including driven hunts, are also popular and provide excellent training for hunting dogs.
Pukekos can be destructive to crops and native plantings. By respectfully seeking permission from landowners, hunters can help reduce pukeko numbers on their paddocks. Public land also offers good hunting opportunities for pukekos.
