Opening weekend satisfaction survey
Most Eastern hunters (62%) that we surveyed were either very satisfied, or quite satisfied, with this years (2024) opening weekend. Although the data is still being compiled many hunters (47%) reported that there were plenty of ducks around.
What is interesting about these figures is that compared with Southland, Eastern hunters are the poor cousins. Luckily game bird hunting is more than just about shooting lots of ducks (for most hunters anyway). Having a great day with mates and family is very important, but so is shooting some ducks. Young hunters are especially keen to bag plenty of birds, whereas the older hunters savor the wilderness experience with family and friends.
Most waterfowl hunting has finished in the Eastern Region but you can still hunt pukeko and of course black swan in management area A1 until the end of August. Pheasant and Californian quail hunting is also open until the end of August. While there are heaps of pukeko and black swan, pheasant and quail hunting has been tough this year but I am sure your dog wont mind just as long as they get to chase a few birds.
