Spawning rivers and streams close from the end of April until the end of September to protect the spawning fish and habitat.
But many rivers remain open all year round and can often be very rewarding.

Check out the Wellington Fish & Game web pages to find out where to fish in winter or call the office (06-3590409) and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Popular rivers still open for fishing include the Hutt and Ruamahanga rivers (below SH2), and large parts of the Rangitikei River.
These rivers take a bit to become dirty and they are packed with trout year-round so they’re always a good option throughout the winter season.
If you didn’t buy a 2018-2019 whole season licence, a winter licence is good value at $78.
It lets you fish fish waters that remain open through to September 30, anywhere in the country except Taupo – click here
