Reel Life September 2024 - North Canterbury
- North Canterbury
- 20/09/2024
Only seven more days until the 2024/25 fishing season kicks off in North Canterbury! The recent lack of rain throughout most of winter has left the rivers low and stable, so the fish should be in great condition, having not been disturbed by major floods.
Remember to check your regulation pamphlet, as most high-country lakes and some select rivers won’t open until the first Saturday of November.
Weekly Fishing Report Update
As announced in the latest Fish & Game Magazine, the North Canterbury team is changing the way we provide the weekly fishing report. Starting this season, we'll be posting the report every Thursday on the North Canterbury Fish & Game Facebook page and website. We will no longer send out the email version previously coordinated with the Central South Island Fish & Game team. Additionally, we’ll include a short video each week with tips and tricks for fishing in the North Canterbury region.
Freshwater Improvement Fund - Glenariffe Update
The resource consent for the Glenariffe project was approved recently, and work began on renaturalising the Glenariffe.
North Canterbury Fish & Game will provide further updates as the project progresses, but anglers fishing there on or after opening should already notice an increase in the fishable water.
Upper Hurunui River Controlled Fishery Trial
The angling community has expressed concerns that the Hurunui North and South Branches have been experiencing high fishing pressure, despite the Designated Waters system. To address this, we are implementing a controlled fishery to manage angling pressure and preserve the high-quality angling and wilderness experience these rivers offer. For more information about the controlled fisheries, visit the link below: Upper Hurunui River Controlled Fishery
Lake Coleridge Fishing Competition
Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 2nd, for the Lake Coleridge Fishing Competition, celebrating the high-country opening. The competition is generously supported by three Hunting & Fishing stores: Ballingers (Tower Junction), Ashburton, and North Canterbury (Rangiora).
Stay tuned to our weekly fishing report for more details and maybe pick up some extra tips that could help you catch the winning fish!
Angling Etiquette
Opening day can be exciting, but it's important to practice good angling etiquette. Leave a note on your vehicle's dashboard indicating your fishing intentions to avoid conflicts with other anglers. If you see another angler, approach them to discuss and reach an agreement, ensuring everyone enjoys a great day on the river.
