Reel Life October 2024 - North Canterbury
- North Canterbury
- 21/10/2024
The fishing season kicked off on a Tuesday this year, and with fewer anglers out on the water, those who ventured out enjoyed a peaceful start to the season. It was also school holiday time, making it great to see families taking advantage of the outdoor opportunities here in the North Canterbury region. Anglers have reported strong success across various waters, a positive sign for the season ahead.
Designated Waters Update
This is the second season with the designated waters regime in effect. Last year, we surveyed both resident and non-resident anglers to gather their feedback on how the regime impacted their wilderness fishing experience. Many anglers were pleased with the changes, noting reduced pressure on popular spots as more anglers began exploring alternative waters with great results.
The benefits extend to the fish as well. With less angling pressure, fish can feed longer and aren't pushed into deeper waters as frequently, helping them maintain good condition throughout the season. We’ll continue to survey anglers this season to further assess satisfaction levels with the designated waters.
Lake Coleridge Fishing Competition
Mark your calendars! Our annual Lake Coleridge Fishing Competition is happening again this year on Saturday, November 2nd. Thanks to the generous support of the Hunting & Fishing stores in Christchurch, North Canterbury, and Ashburton, we have some exciting prizes up for grabs. The event will take place at the Ryton Bay turn-off, with weigh-ins starting at 9 a.m. and the prize ceremony kicking off at 2 p.m.
Whether you're a boat or shore angler, there’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the high-country fishing experience. Gather your family and friends and head to the high-country for a fun-filled day. For more details, check out our weekly fishing reports on Facebook or visit our website.
