River and stream update
The rivers and streams of the region have been hard fishing in low, clear water. Very low rainfall through October and November in much of the region saw the rivers drop to a similar level as they were back in late January. Some recent rainfall has been a relief and the meteorological reports are predicting late summer may see more regular rain which will be required to avoid drought conditions.
Reservoir update
Whau valley fishing has been getting progressively better. With the warming water the insect life has been proliferating, creating an abundant food source for fish cruising the shorelines. The fish that are being caught are in great condition with deep pink/red fillets – ideal for the smoker. Even the fish from the recent liberation in May are reaching takeable size which shows that growth rates are good. The observant angler will notice that there are plenty of dragonflies around. When this is the case a dragonfly or damsel fly larva imitation is a good option. Recently caught fish have had bellies full of dragonfly larva. If you can see dragonfly shell husks on the rocks and banks (see photo below), then you know that the larvae are active in the water column and the trout are likely seeking them out below the surface. A simple, effective rig is to hang two flies 2-3 feet under a float or indicator, the first being a bead head nymph with a dropper line tied off the gape of the nymph hook going to your dragonfly larva imitation. Cast it out from the dam wall or shore line and watch that indicator. When it bobs under lift the rod to set the hook. Once the surface water gets too warm the fishing will slow in the reservoirs so give it a go while the fish are still active on the surface within easy reach of the shore.

Regulation Changes
No changes to the regulations. All our waters are open year round to all permitted methods.
We need your help!!
If you catch any trout in Northland can you please weigh and measure the fish. Then send that information to us either via email or messenger. Any size fish will give us useful information on the health of the fishery. Don’t worry we will keep your prized spot secret. Any fish catch data submitted will go into the draw for a whole season licence or family licence.
Take the Family Fishing
The new season commences on Saturday 1st October 2023. The family licence is by far the best value for money licence on offer. A family licence can be made up of two parents or grandparents and up to four of their children or grandchildren under the age of 18. This licence can also be used anywhere in NZ, except the Lake Taupo fishery.
