Reel Life December 2020

Christmas is almost upon us and visitor numbers to the region will swell during the summer break.

Northland is more renowned for its salt water fishing and beaches rather than its trout fishery.

However we do have some nice accessible spots that are definitely worth giving a try and are productive.

Above Right: The Kerikeri River.

The weather has been settled and rainfall sporadic. This has led to our rivers running low and clear producing great fishing conditions.

We have had some reports of good fish taken out of Whau Valley Dam and the Kerikeri River catchment.

Freshwater Jig Rigs work well in the Kai iwi lakes and Lake Manuwai as the fish tend to hold near the bottom as the water temperatures increase.

Slow moving veltic or mepps spinners are ideal for our smaller streams.

Rabbit and hairy dog lures are the usual go-to lures for Northland conditions and are productive any time of year.
