Reel Life October 2019

With the long weekend just a day away, it's the perfect time to head out to your favourite fishing spot and chance your arm at catching a fish.

As the days get long and hopefully warmer - though labour weekend does have a reputation for being fickle on the weather front - fish will start to become more active and looking to build condition after the winter.

This means they'll be a bit more susceptible to what anglers cast in-front of them, be that a fly, spinner or soft bait.

All in all this is a prime time for anglers looking to catch a fish.

Which is also perfect timing for our High Country fisheries in the South Island which open in November.

These fisheries are in some of the most scenically beautiful parts of the country and many are surprisingly close to our cities, often only a couple of hours away.

The lakes and rivers in the high country make for a fantastic trip for the family that gets you into the outdoors and experiencing what is wonderful about our country.

Take a youngster fishing

Around the country Fish & Game regions have been running family fishing events

Some like the one at Central South Island are yet to happen on 3rd November.

These events are a fantastic way for junior anglers to be introduced into the joys of fishing.

But we shouldn't rely on a special day to take youngsters out fishing.

Each region has areas which tend to be perfect places for novice anglers to learn and fish in, don't be afraid to give your local Fish & Game Office a call for advice and hints.

Make it your goal this season to introduce someone new to fishing.

And don't forget to share that with us by a photo, email: rcosgrove@fishandgame.org.nz
