As the new fishing season gets into full swing, Hawke's Bay Fish & Game has a new regional manager, Jesse Friedlander.
His background includes work in wildlife management and conservation throughout New Zealand, and in Canada and the Seychelles.
In Canada, Jesse worked in Alberta for a biodiversity monitoring institute.
The work included monitoring “camera traps” set to record game species such as moose, deer and wolves. Other projects focused on the health of local wetlands.
In the Seychelles, he was involved with avian eradication projects, in particular targeting Indian Ring Neck Parakeet in order to stop their spread into the world heritage site of Vallée de Mai.
Jesse Friedlander grew up in Napier in an outdoorsy life that featured both freshwater and salt water fishing.
He was also a keen hunter of both deer and ducks in season.
Jesse is keen to “get better at fly fishing” after mainly spin fishing for trout in recent times.
“Workwise, I’m at the bottom of a pretty steep learning curve at the moment, as I get my head around Fish & Game methods and programmes, but as time goes on I’m eager to get out and about and connect with as many hunters and anglers as possible,” he says.
“Please get in touch if you have trout or game bird questions and we’ll do our best to answer them – we welcome contact from our licenceholders.”
