We have been blown away by the support for our Rewild campaign.
Fishing and hunting is part of who we are as Kiwis, and getting out among nature has many benefits, from catching wild kai to improved mental health and wellbeing, as well as encouraging support for good environmental custodianship and conservation.
It’s also a great way to connect with whānau and friends, to teach children skills, instil a desire to protect the environment and help them learn independence.
Spin fishing is a great way to begin, as the skills are quickly mastered.
You’ll need a basic outfit of rod, reel and line, a few lures and a New Zealand fishing licence, and then you’ll have a good chance of catching trout. You’ll also begin to learn watercraft and trout habits that will stand you in great stead on your freshwater fishing journey. You’ll also be surprised how quickly you become an expert in what a healthy stream, river or lake looks like and what thrives there.
We’ve put together a comprehensive list of ‘how to’ guides and videos to help you get started with spin or fly fishing. It includes the ‘need to know’ basics, the tackle and equipment you’ll need, where you can fish, finding the fish, ‘reading the water’, looking after the fish you catch, purchasing a licence and the fishing code of conduct.
Happy fishing, and we look forward to hearing many great rewilding stories!
