Reel Life April 2024 - Auckland/Waikato

It is time to get ready for late season fishing

The season is far from over and the rain is sure to get fish moving with our browns already in spawning mode.

If we do get rain, the Waikato Spring creeks are a good bet and we have had some great reports this week.

The Whakapapa can also handle a bit of rain due to the power scheme removing excess water.

It is more important to keep an eye on water levels this time of year, so if you have not already checked out Flowrate.co.nz have a look at the handy gauging site that combines many of the regional council and power company stations that are spread out over several web pages.

Stone Jug Road consultation letters of support needed

Fish and Game purchased the Stone Jug Road property with assistance from Genesis Energy to open access to the Whakapapa River that was previously blocked.

Auckland/Waikato Fish and Game would now like to place an easement and riparian strips on the title to ensure enduring public access at the property.

There is no plan to sell the property but with Fish & Game is under review by the government, so ownership could potentially change in the future.

Additionally, if another access property was found that could provide additional public access on the Whakapapa or Whanganui Rivers, the Stone Jug Road property could be sold to raise funding.

Staff have applied for funding to survey the property and place enduring public access on the title through Herenga a Nuku Aotearoa (The Outdoor Access Commission).

If you would like public access at the Stone Jug Road Property for future generations, please send a letter of support to adaniel@fishandgame.org.nz.

If you value public access and want to leave a legacy for future anglers, we are actively seeking donors to create an access fund in the Auckland/Waikato Region, for more information call Adam at 022 030 9033.

Euro Nymphing Clinic May18-19

We are pleased to announce another Euro Nymphing Clinic by Ollie Bassett.

Anglers in the Auckland/ Waikato Region are very lucky to have Ollie in the area as there are very limited opportunities to learn to fly fish in New Zealand.

Please see the poster for further information or email Ollie at olliebassettflyfishign@gmail.com.
