Fishing has been exceptionally hard during the day at Rotorua both out on the lake flats and close to the stream mouths. With friends Warren Derrick and Ron Blair we had been fishing all day at Waiteti and Hamurana and had returned the the Hamurana carpark to prepare for a night fish. The previous night on a doll fly I had caught a Rainbow of 3lb, not big but excellent condition. Anyway on dusk we set off out into the lake with the usual anticipation as one does. Fortunately the lake was calm with the wind from the nor-east. A few fish were caught and towards 11pm Warren said he was heading in and we said we would be far behind him. Well almost within casting distance of the stream mouth we heard some splashing and yelled out to Warren was that him and what was it. He called back saying yes it was him and by the way the fish was fighting he thought it was a Brown. By this time we were already heading back and arrived in time to see Warren net his fish. Well it wan't a Brown but a 6.17lb Rainbow of absolute excellent condition. The picture was taken that night of a very happy and tired fisher. Photo from Barrie Barnes,

Not that you can actually see the fish in this photo, but it was a Brown Trout about 3 1/2 or 4 pounds taken from Conroy's Dam near Alexandra on the 10th Jan 2014. What is special about this is that my Dad and my young Son were there with me fishing and that not less than 10 years had passed since I last caught a Trout with my Dad. He taught me fly fishing many years ago, but now finds it harder to do a days fishing so each time is special in itself. A fantastic day with a great result. Photo from Adam Stodart
