The major role of Fish & Game New Zealand is to protect the habitat of sports fish and game birds.

This includes lobbying for appropriate environmental policies, developing and enhancing wetlands, providing advice, advocating for clean water and environmentally sustainable farming practices, and improving awareness of New Zealand’s outstanding but threatened freshwater resources. This work also benefits anyone who values quality water and wetland environments, and the many species that use these places.

We also use a mix of natural and physical sciences such as research into bird and freshwater habitat, biodiversity, species population control and ecosystem dynamics to control the impact of angling and hunting on freshwater fish and game bird stocks.
