North Canterbury Take a Kid Fishing day brings in the crowds

Over 5000 Cantabrians packed out the four Childrens Fishing Lakes at the Groynes on Sunday for the annual Take A Kid Fishing day.

Early morning rain cleared for perfect weather at the 9am start and crowds of children and parents came to try their hand at catching a salmon or trout.

Six year-old Freya Askew, right,  landed a monster nine pound rainbow trout, one of 20 trophy rainbow trout released into the lakes by North Canterbury Fish & Game.

FGNZ NC TAKF10Some young anglers like nine year-old Hugh Sevier, left, only took 20 minutes to catch their bag limit of two fish, Hugh then had to wait for his brother to try and catch his limit too.

Eight hundred and thirty salmon were also released and children were catching them throughout the day.

Event Organiser Dale Coulter said that people were not scared off by the early rain, and a steady stream of junior anglers enjoyed a successful day.

This family event is organised by the Kids Fishing Charitable Trust, supported by Fish & Game and the Isaac Conservation trust.FGNZ NC TAKF05

The event is free and open to anglers aged 17 and under.

Over the summer months North Canterbury Fish & Game will restock the lakes regularly so parents looking for something to do with their children will have the opportunity to try their hand at angling.

Fish & Game host kids fish out events throughout the country, the Central South Island event is on November 18 in Twizel.
