Northern Hawke's Bay Access Points
Lake Tutira Access Points
1 - Access here is signposted by a rest area road sign which leads to a track that runs between lakes Tutira and Waikopiro. This track leads around the entire southern end of the lake providing ample fishing opportunity from the shore. Camping and toilet facilities also provide for those wanting to stay the night.
2 - Access here is off a gravel track that leads around to a boat ramp. The track can be accessed by north and south bound traffic.
3 - Access here is signposted with a Fish and Game access sign. A gravel track leads around the northern end to a car park. From here there is an open shoreline that provides access to some great fishing.
4 - Access here is obtained by driving to the bottom of Aropaoanui Road and crossing the bridge. From here the river can easily be accessed. From approximately 250m upstream on the true right, the entire length of the river can be accessed as marginal strip runs up its entire length on this side.
5 - Approximately 2km north of the Devils Elbow on SH2 before the Waikoau Bridge there is a large gravel bay where you can park well off the road and access the river by walking over the bank.
6 - Directly after the Waikoau Bridge to the north is a gravel road that leads off to a ford that crosses the river. Park on the grass before the ford. From here you can walk the river right up to the next access point.
7 - Approximately 2km up Waikoau Road from Tutira you cross the Waikoau Road Bridge. Park on the true right of the bridge on the down stream side. Be sure to park well off the road on the grass. From here there is a track that leads back cowards the bridge and down to the river.
Esk Access Points
8 - Access to the Esk mouth can be obtained by turning off SH2 onto Franklin then turning left onto Le Quesne Road at the T-intersection. Drive to the end of this road and park on the sea side of the road. From here it is approximately a 400m walk along the beach to the river mouth.
9 - Turn off SH5 onto Shaw road. Follow the signs to the Eskdale Park. Once in the park follow the vehicle track to the rivers edge.
10 - The Waipunga Road Bridge provides access to the river on the true left. Marginal strip runs down the river on the true right for a short distance so when fishing up or down stream outside of this you must stay within the river bed.
11 - Just after crossing the railway on Ellis Wallace Road there is a parking bay off to the right which provides access to the river.
12 - At the end of Ellis Wallace Road there is a ford chat crosses the river. From this point marginal strip runs up both sides giving access to over 10km of river.
13 - Approximately 32km up SH5 towards Taupo rum right onto Ohurakura Road, chis road rums to gravel. Approx. 8km down this road turn right onto Berry Road. Follow Berry Road until you reach the first forestry gate where you should find an angler access. From here it is walking access only, so park away from the gate and walk the 1.7km to the Esk River.
14 - Lake Opouahi is found 10km from State Highway 2 on Pohokura Road. There is fishing from the wharf or alternatively take a kayak to fish from.
