Taranaki Kids’ Trout Fishing Events
This year’s take a kid trout fishing events will be held on Saturday October 28 at Opunake Lake and at Lake Rotomanu in New Plymouth.
The Opunake event is being run by the Opunake Surfcasting & Angling Club in conjunction with Fish & Game NZ, Elite Farm Solutions, RD1/Farm Source, More FM, 4Square 45 and Collins Sports Centre.
A total of 250 trout will be corralled within a holding net at the top end of Opunake Lake and children will be able to fish for them with the help of local experts.
Opunake Hydro will ensure that the lake level is held steady for the event, which will run from 9.15am to 1.45pm on the Saturday with all fishing gear supplied.
To reduce waiting times, anglers should book a 15-minute time slot at Collins Sports Centre in Tasman Street Opunake (06 761 8778). The angling club is requesting a donation of $2 per child, with the proceeds going towards spot prizes for the event.
The Lake Rotomanu event is being run by the Inglewood Rod, Gun & Recreation Club and children will also be able to fish for 250 good-sized rainbow trout corralled in a holding net.
All fishing gear will be supplied, although any donations of worms for bait will be gratefully received. To reduce waiting times, anglers are asked to book a 15 minute time-slot by visiting or phoning the Taranaki Hunting & Fishing store in Ocean View Parade, Moturoa (06 757 2255).
To introduce kids to trout fishing, Taranaki Fish & Game holds a series of ‘fish out’ events where children can fish under supervision for rainbow trout released into a netted-off area of lake or river.
While everyone needs a licence to fish for trout (and perch) Fish & Game issues an authority that allows kids to fish for free during these events.
At the end of each fish out, the nets are removed and anglers who hold a current licence can target the remaining trout.
Whole season licences are free to kids under 12 on October 1, and they cost $25 for 12-17 year-olds. Day (24hr) licences for this age group cost only $5.
Fish and Game NZ is a non-profit organisation and all licence fees go back into the management of the resource.
