Kids fish out Ngongotaha2Has your kid caught their first fish? Here’s your chance to give your child this thrilling experience – with help from experts.

Fish & Game’s ‘kids fish out’ days are on again.

This fun opportunity is run by the Rotorua Anglers Association who show children six to 14 years of age how to catch a fish. The fish out days are held at a special pond at Fish & Game’s Ngongotaha hatchery in Paradise Valley Road, Rotorua.

The days are so popular that pre-booking is essential!

Beginner's guide to boat fishing

Eastern Fish & Game staff will be running a free boat fishing talk at Lake Tarawera this summer.

The talk is designed to cover the basics of successful boat fishing for trout and allow an insight into the trout, its habits and habitats, food and the seasonal changes that affect its behavior.

It's a no nonsense, non-technical talk and best of all it's totally free – just turn up and find yourself a spot at Stoney Point (a foldout chair, hat, sun screen and drink might be handy if hot, raincoat if it’s wet).

Start Time: 10am, all welcome, no bookings required!
Duration: about 2 hours

 Taranaki

This year’s first take a kid trout fishing event will be held on Saturday October 27 at Lake Ngangana, which is located adjacent to the Taranaki Kart Club track near Waitara.

This event is being run with help from the Inglewood Rod, Gun & Recreation Club and children will be able to fish for 250 good-sized rainbow trout corralled in a holding net.

To reduce waiting times, anglers are asked to book a 15 minute time-slot by visiting or phoning the Taranaki Hunting & Fishing store in Ocean View Parade, Moturoa (06 757 2255).

A release of 250 two year-old rainbow trout will also be made into Opunake Lake in late October, but there will be no organised event this year.

The final kids’ trout fishing day will be held on Saturday December 15 at the Scout Den pool in Stratford’s King Edward Park.
