Game Bird Hunting in Central South Island

Many of the region's larger river beds and lakes are public lands.

However it's still important to advise the adjoining landowner if you plan to hunt these areas. This basic courtesy often results in farmers and other rural folk providing useful information and better access.

Depending on water levels the council has between nine and 13 stands available for opening weekend on the wetlands it owns or manages. These are balloted annually and invitations to apply are advertised in local papers in February or early March. Chukar hunting in the Central South Island region is by permit only.
