Events including childrens' fishing days are held by Fish & Game across New Zealand to support and encourage fishing participation. See below for current event information.

North Island

Auckland/Waikato

Kilwell Lower Waikato River Trout Contest

Runs for one week, Saturday to Saturday, October 6 to 13, 2018

Entry: Adults (18-plus) $35, Juniors (17 & under) $15

Fishing Area: Waikato River only from below Karapiro

Dam to Waikato Heads.

28 main prizes including heaviest rainbow and heaviest brown, a total of more than $6,000 in fishing packages.

Tokoroa Take a Kid Fishing Competition

To be held at Lake Moana Nui November 2 to 4th. 

Lake Moana Nui is stocked by Fish & Game annually and it’s a great place for kids to fish with good walkways and playground equipment next to the lake. 

Kids can enter the competition at the lake on the day. You don’t have to attend all three days, the prize-giving is worth attending.

Rotorua

Has your kid caught their first fish? Here’s your chance to give your child this thrilling experience – with help from experts.

Fish & Game’s ‘kids fish out’ days are on again.

This fun opportunity is run by the Rotorua Anglers Association who show children six to 14 years of age how to catch a fish. The fish out days are held at a special pond at Fish & Game’s Ngongotaha hatchery in Paradise Valley Road, Rotorua.

The days are so popular that pre-booking is essential!

The region is holding children’s events at Lake Ngangana near Waitara and at Opunake Lake on October 27, and at the Scout den pool on the Patea River in the heart of Stratford on December 8.

Otago

Beginner Adults Fishing Classes

Two hour theory class, evenings of Tuesday 4^th, Wednesday 5^th & Thursday 6^th September 2018

1.5hrs fishing at the Southern Reservoir, Saturday 8^th September 2018

Central South Island

A  kids fish out day is planned for Loch Cameron in early November, dates to be confirmed.

Nelson/Marlborough

There will be a series of events in the region starting in November 2018 and running through into the new year to finish in autumn 2019.

Southland

A childrens' fishing event will be held at McGregor Pond,  Te Anau, on the Friday afternoon and Saturday of Labour Weekend (2018). Fish & Game has reared 300 fish for the event, which were donated by Sanfords.
