LAKES ROTONGARO AND LITTLE ROTONGARO WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT RESERVE (also known as Ratongaro-iti)
Wildlife Management Reserve - DoC permit required. Some 340 hectares of open water connected by shallow canal and surrounded by farmland. Often popular area for geese. A DoC permit is required for both.
Access Points
- Pukekapia Road
Vehicular and foot access to southern Lake Rotongaro from Pukekapia Road then along unformed public road to lake. Boat access probably summer only. - Rotongaro-Rangiriri Road
Vehicular and foot access across private lands. Landowner permission required. Provides access to northern Rotongaro lake. - Rotongaro-Rangiriri Road
Legal unformed public road provides difficult foot access to Little Rotongaro-iti. - Rotongaro-Rangiriri Road
Private land affords practical access only to Lake Little Rotongaro. Landowner permission required.
LAKE OKOWHAO WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT RESERVE
12 hectares of open water, surrounded by DoC reserve. DoC permit required. - Okowhao Road, Huntly
Legal public vehicle access via farm race to the western edge of reserve. - Te Ohaki Road, Huntly
Practical vehicular and foot access via private land. Landowner permission required.
