Vast weed beds and still quiet backwaters provide some hunting opportunity, however pronounced lake level fluctuation swings can affect hunting. Also popular for other recreational activities such as rowing and wake boarding.

Horahora Reserve off Maungatautari Road, Horahora. Boat ramps provide access to "Stumpy Bay" and lake further south. (Camping permitted - fully self contained camper vans only, short term stays. No freedom camping). - Aniwanawa Reserve
Foot access only from Horahora Road near Pokaiwhenua Stream mouth. - Little Waipa Domain
Boat Ramp off Horahora Road where Waipa Stream enters Lake Karapiro gives access to wide calm backwaters and swifter areas upstream (camping permitted - fully self contained camper vans only). - Finlay Park
