....... to the June 2008 edition of Reel Life.

With many rivers and lake around the country closed for the end of season, it is a quiet time for Reel Life as well, with just a few bits of news both nationally and locally.

Access is always a major issue for freshwater angling. Here you can read the NZ Council submission to the Public Access Bill.

Last chance to participate in a national survey, commissioned by the government, about people’s use of freshwater areas for recreational purposes. It closes at the end of June, so if you have not yet participated, please complete the survey here – it will only take about 15 minutes, and there is the added bonus that you could win a $100 sports voucher!

Now, around the regions....

Auckland / Waikato provide some details about where the keen winter angler may still get some sport, and also provide a hot tip for the chance to get amongst some big rainbows right now!

Eastern Region keeps us posted on which waters are open, which are closed, as well as highlighting some of the best winter fishing spots. They also remind us that the 2008 Children's Fishing Programme begins shortly.

Hawke's Bay look at the winter fishing options in the region, highlighting Tutira and the Mohaka as the pick of the bunch.

Taranaki have provided a helpful summary and some detailed information about where to go for winter fishing; they also issue a timely reminder about Didymo.

Into the South Island....

The West Coast takes this opportunity of a lull in fishing to keep us updated on progress and impact in local proposed hydro schemes, especially the Mokihinui.

In the Central South Island, spawning counts are nearly complete. They also report back on lake stocking and winter fishing options.

We also have a few fishing reports from our hardy correspondents around the country - use the menu to the left to see these.

Finally, Hugh Creasy, in his inimitable fashion, brings to life an expedition at twilight, in At the end are the rainbows.

Good fishing
