August 2010: Regional News
All Taranaki ringplain streams and rivers received a significant fresh in mid-August as a result of a 24-hour total of 280-350mm of rain on the mountain.  The Stony River peaked at 315m3/s and not surprisingly, there has been more erosion in the Pyramid Stream headwater tributary and the river is currently running grey-green, with plenty of sand. More

May 2010: Regional Update
Anglers who fished regularly in ringplain rivers and streams last season report that they were pretty happy with how the season went.  While they had to dodge frequent early-season freshes, the settled conditions that prevailed after Christmas were ideal and experienced anglers were pleased with the large size and good condition of many of the trout they caught. More

April 2010: Regional News
Like many parts of the country (excluding Fiordland), ringplain streams have been subject to long periods of low flow since Christmas, but despite this, anglers have been reasonably happy with the way the season has gone. Anglers in the Waimarino are reporting a mixed season with good numbers of fish being seen and a number of decent size fish being caught away from the main fisheries such as the Manganuioteao River and in the Mangawhero river and Taonui Stream. More

March 2010: Regional update
Conditions are looking good for the last month of the trout fishing main season. No further reports related to the possible illegal overharvesting of sports fish. February 2010: Regional update
Attention all Taranaki Fish and Game Region sports fish licence holders!
Reports received indicate that over the weekend of 20/21 February 2010, a number of foreign tourists, possibly of Polish or Czech nationality, have been sighted over harvesting trout in the Waimarino and Ruapehu areas.  It is thought that these criminals are in the process of travelling round the North Island in one or more camper vans. More

December 2009: Regional update
North Taranaki rivers had a significant early morning fresh through them on Saturday 12th December, with peaks exceeding 200 m3/s the Stony and Waiwhakaiho rivers and smaller streams, such as the Waiongana and Mangaoraka, peaking in the 40-70 m3/s range.  More

October 2009: Regional update
While the start of the new trout fishing season has seen a lot of water in local rivers as a succession of fronts have crossed the region, anglers who have timed their visits in between freshes have found plenty of trout feeding activity and many of the fish have been large and in good condition. More

September 2009: The season ahead and regional update
The weather conditions experience over the last few weeks have been extremely variable shifting from a false spring, raising temperatures giving the farming community a short respite from the winter and the promise of renewed pasture growth, to a rapid southerly switch that refreshes the ski slopes with a few more centimetres of the white stuff.  More

August 2009: Taranaki Update
Taranaki rivers and streams have been subject to only modest freshes since the close of last season, barring one significant event in late July (see below), which was not large enough to upset what was a good spawning season. More

June 2009: Winter update
Winter is traditionally a quiet time for trout fishing on the Taranaki ringplain, as most waters are closed for trout spawning, which is now well underway.  But fishing is still available in a number of local lakes and the lower reaches of a selection of coastal rivers and streams. More

May 2009: Taranaki Ringplain
As is usual most of the ringplain rivers and streams have been closed to fishing from 1st May but for those who are more than happy to brave the changing elements and cast a line than a number of waters remain open are continuing to produce good fish.  Good fishing can still be had at Lake Mangamahoe, the Waiwhakaiho River downstream from the end of the gravel track at the right-hand end of Rimu Street, Opunake Lake, the Waingongoro River and the Kaupokonui Stream downstream of SH45. More

March 2009: Taranaki Ringplain
Conditions are looking good for the last month of the trout fishing main season, with water temperatures falling into the 13-17 degree range most preferred by trout and passion-vine hoppers and other terrestrial food sources such as grass hoppers and crickets still present in abundance. More

February 2009: Taranaki Ringplain
Stream flows receded steadily during January and early February, but two freshes mid-month provided welcome relief (Figure 1), scouring out riverbed algae and restoring stream base flows. With the forecast of more rain to come in February, the outlook for mid-late summer angling remains positive. More

Saturday’s free kids trout fishing day was a great success, with 122 children catching a total of 89 trout and many kids experiencing the thrill of catching their first fish. More

Spring freshes continued in ringplain streams during October, providing a mix of conditions that favoured fly fishing during stable flows in the middle of the month and spin and bait fishing at other times. More
