Wanaka Fishing Report From Richard Grimmett
Since my last report the high country rivers have opened on 1st November and the new fishing season is underway here.
The weather was good early in the month but with snow melting these streams and rivers have at times been discolored. Wind has also caused some difficulties.
On days when conditions have been favorable good sized browns and rainbows have been spotted in good quantities and rising to dry flies.
When the wind has made dry fly fishing impossible nymphs and streamers have proved very successful. Heavy rain in the last few days has made fishing these waters impossible with them discolored and flowing high. These may take a few days to get back to normal.
We are fortunate to have the lakes when conditions are like this and it is possible to find a sheltered bay where dry flies are now on the menu. Fishing a streamer or for the spin fisherman river mouths are a good option. Lake Wanaka is fairly high which is average for this time and Hawea low and rising.
The Hawea fishing competition was held recently with some excellent catches reported.
November and early December are often underestimated and when conditions are good some great catches are possible, as good if not better than any other time during the season.
Sorry this report is brief but more next time.
