If you catch a tagged fish, please contact the regional Fish & Game office

Fish & Game New Zealand’s Otago region has, without doubt, some of the most diverse waters for sports fishing in New Zealand. They range from the unique high country experiences on gin clear Southern Lakes river tributaries to put and take reservoir fisheries in Dunedin City.

Each year thousands of residents and visitors enjoy many types of angling throughout Otago waters. You can help to maintain our fisheries by respecting the rules and regulations laid down by Fish & Game New Zealand’s Otago Region.

Angling Conditions

Field staff report on the current river and lake conditions in Otago from Mid-September throughout summer until end of April in the following year. These reports are made on a weekly basis and are broadcast on regional radio stations on Thursdays and Fridays each week and appear in Friday’s Otago Daily Times. Another source of information on angling conditions is the Otago Regional Council’s 24 hour ‘Flowphone’ (03) 4796493

Pollution Complaints

For complaints about pollution or damage to rivers contact the Otago Regional Council’s 24 hour Pollution Hotline on 0800 800 033 in the first instance.
