Hawke’s Bay July fishing update

As mentioned in last month’s article Lake Tutira has begun to fish very productively. Many anglers are taking advantage of trout coming in close to spawn with great success. So for those who haven’t yet taken advantage get out there quick as it sounds like the fishing is getting better day by day.

On another note, once a contract is finalised, Hawke’s Bay Fish and Game staff will be conducting creel surveys at Lake Tutira for a period of 12 months. The aim of these surveys is to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the fishery and anglers. Fish and Game, will be conducting the surveys on behalf of Biosecurity New Zealand (MAF-BNZ), as part of their programme to eradicate the aquatic weed Hydrilla. As well as assisting MAF-BNZ in their work on Hydrilla, the results from these surveys will also help us better understand angler satisfaction and aspirations for Hawke’s Bays only lake fishery and will become a regular part of the lake’s monitoring in future years.

Lake Tutira on a beautiful winter’s day

The new access track down stream of Glenfalls Reserve, which leads off Waitara Rd, is only one day’s solid work away from being completed. The initial hard work of cutting through the thick blackberry is done. The track now just needs a bit of digging to make the track flatter, so it is safer to walk down. In the near future anglers will enjoy the new fishing opportunities this track will allow, so when in the area look out for the new access sign.

Winter started quite wet, which was enjoyed by many farmers as water was scarce, but was not enjoyed by anglers as rivers dirtied. However, the average rainfall we have been receiving has seemed to have dropped a little and winter is looking a little dryer, hopefully this continues, as it will mean clean fishable water for the rest of the winter season.
