Mackenzie Country Fishing Report
It is hard to believe that there are bushfires raging in Australia and that it faces it's harshest drought in recorded history. A mere 2500 odd kilometers away in the South Island of New Zealand, we are suffering from too much water and still waiting for the temperatures to get up above 20 degrees for the summer!
Still, the conditions have set the district up beautifully for a fantastic summer season, with plenty of water in the lakes and rivers of the Mackenzie country. Trout are in abundance and in good condition all around, with some magnificent specimens from the Tekapo and Waitaki Rivers in recent days. Condition factor is relatively high all around, and fish are feeding freely on both nymphs and dries, with the faithful Royal Wulff accounting for a lot of the dry fly activity and a Copper John sufficing for the nymphs.
It is a matter of finding clear water, which even a little bit of rain is making hard at the moment, as the groundwater levels are so high, no rain is soaking in any more. However, the lowland rivers are cleaning up quickly, even if the high country rivers are taking a little longer.
For some sensational and uncrowded fishing in the lead up to Christmas, the Tekapo River is hard to go past. Over-crowded at the start of the season, with high and dirty flows, it has kept a lot of anglers away for the past month and means that the fish are feeding freely and frequently enjoying the mayflies that are lifting off each afternoon.
We're all looking forward to summer and provided the rains stay away, you should expect plenty of quality fishing through the Mackenzie Country this season.
