South Canterbury Angler Survey.
Mark Webb, Fish and Game Officer

Three, fortnightly surveys have been completed and around 200 anglers chosen randomly from the 1,500 available in the Timaru/Fairlie/Geraldine area have been interviewed. The results for those interviewed when scaled up for all licence holders indicate about 750 anglers have fished the Opihi River, 350 have fished Lake Opuha and about 130 have fished the Temuka River. It is estimated that about 1,300 trout have been caught in the Opihi of which 63% have been returned. The return rate in Lake Opuha is slightly higher at 67% of the 620 fish caught.

A summary of angler effort and catch for each fortnightly period is provided.

Trout Release for Lake Camp
Two thousand yearling rainbow trout of about 100 g have been made available to us by NCFG Montrose hatchery. These have been earmarked for release to Lake Camp and permits from Ministry of Fisheries and Biosecurity NZ have been obtained. The release will occur during November to improve fishing returns to young anglers for whom Lake Camp is popular.

North Canterbury Fish and Game have undertaken to provide a similar or greater number of yearling rainbows in 2008.
